Bali in December can suit a solo trip built around food, culture and a comfortable place to stay. Plan for rain, give outdoor activities room to move, and keep boat crossings optional. If dependable beach weather, clear sunrise views or an island-hopping itinerary are the main reason for your holiday, December requires more flexibility than that trip may allow.

The useful question is whether you would still enjoy your plan if the beach afternoon became a long lunch and an outdoor excursion moved to another day.

Sanur and Ubud give this trip two bases: time on the coast, a cooking class and museum visits, with room to change the outdoor days. Heavy rain can also bring flooding and disrupt access. Check the actual hotel and its approach roads before booking; neither area name is a safety assurance.

What weather should you plan for in December?

BMKG’s 22 September 2026 seasonal announcement forecast the start of the rainy season in November for parts of Bali and December for much of the island. It placed the expected peak in January 2027 for central Bali and February for much of Bali. Those are regional seasonal predictions, not forecasts for individual holiday dates. BMKG’s September announcement.

A newer 2 October 2026 national outlook also describes a delayed rainy-season onset across much of Indonesia, with El Niño expected to persist into early 2027. Its national summary cannot establish the weather at your hotel or on Christmas Day. BMKG’s October seasonal outlook.

Use historical climate patterns to decide whether the season suits your activities, the seasonal outlook to plan flexibility, and local forecasts and warnings to make decisions close to the day.

You cannot turn the seasonal outlook into a count of sunny days. Equally, the start of a rainy season does not establish that rain will fall continuously throughout your holiday. Avoid planning around promises that it only rains briefly or always waits until the afternoon.

As your dates approach, Apple Weather on iPhone or AccuWeather on Android is a convenient way to check the everyday forecast for each place on your route. Use BMKG’s Bali forecasts and official warnings for decisions about heavy rain and hazardous conditions. Feature and alert coverage varies by app and location. Apple’s published coverage lists do not include Indonesia for severe-weather information or next-hour precipitation notifications, so do not assume your phone will alert you to every local hazard. Apple Weather feature coverage.

Check again before an outdoor day and select the area you will actually visit. A forecast for the coast should not stand in for conditions at an inland destination.

Early December or Christmas and New Year?

Do not assume rainy season means a quiet Christmas or New Year. Bali airport describes the festive period as a recurring peak for travel. Its December 2025 preparations included extra traffic management around airport access. That supports planning for holiday congestion, but does not predict visitor numbers for December 2026. Bali airport’s festive travel guidance.

If your dates are flexible and celebrations are not a priority, consider early December to avoid the Christmas and New Year travel rush. This is not a guarantee of empty beaches or clear roads. Before making evening plans during the festive period, ask your hotel about nearby events, road closures and pickup arrangements.

For a quieter stay, ask whether your room faces an event venue or busy road. Ask your hotel or driver to allow extra time for airport transfers, and avoid scheduling a hotel move and a fixed-time celebration on the same evening.

Choose a dated 2026 festive programme

If festive dining or a show matters to your holiday, look for an explicitly dated December 2026 programme rather than an undated page that may describe last year’s event.

Mulia Bali has published Christmas dining on 24 and 25 December 2026, and A Night in Elysium on 31 December 2026 in its Grand Ballroom, with live entertainment leading into 2027. It also lists separate New Year’s Eve dining. The ballroom event is an indoor option; confirm the restaurant and seating arrangements for dining. Mulia’s official 2026 festive programme.

These are separate dining and event bookings. A room reservation does not establish that admission is included. Confirm the final price, taxes, one-person availability, seating and cancellation terms, and arrange your return transport before paying. Keeping a celebration near your accommodation reduces the journey you depend on late at night.

Where should a solo traveler stay in December?

Choose accommodation around the days you want to have, including the days when you stay close to the hotel.

Sanur: a coastal base with an easy daily routine

Sanur offers a beachfront path and places to eat, making it a useful starting point for settling into a first trip. Wandopia’s first solo trip to Bali guide explains the Sanur-and-Ubud approach in more detail.

For December, check the actual hotel location rather than relying on “Sanur” in its listing. Look for nearby meals, straightforward vehicle access and a room where you would be happy spending a quiet afternoon. A hotel with dining on site can be worth considering if you arrive late or prefer not to go out in heavy rain.

Beach time remains part of the plan when conditions suit it. Keep swimming and boat trips flexible.

Ubud: give food and cultural activities proper time

Ubud is the base for the cooking, art and textile activities below. Stay near the places you expect to use, or deliberately budget for transport from a more secluded property.

A villa outside the center may appeal for its setting. Before booking, ask how you reach it, whether a car can collect you at the entrance, and where you would eat if you decide to stay in. A view is easier to enjoy when the practical arrangements also work.

For this route, start your Ubud accommodation search with the class locations and museum you want to visit. Compare the hotel’s actual pickup point, nearby meals and cancellation terms. Choose Ubud for these inland days, with outdoor walks as flexible additions.

For either base, compare the total price for one adult and your exact nights, together with the cancellation terms and room facilities. A pool photograph says little about how useful the hotel will be on a wet afternoon.

Flood checks before you book

Rain can affect more than an afternoon outing. BPBD Bali’s update on the September 2025 disaster recorded 205 flood locations across the province, with Denpasar having the largest spread of flood locations in that event. This is evidence of a major past event, not a forecast for your December stay. BPBD’s September 2025 update.

Check flood exposure in Sanur as carefully as anywhere else. A Denpasar government report dated 3 October 2026 describes river-clearing work at Tukad Loloan in Sanur Kauh and drainage construction near Pantai Duyung to reduce flood risk. Work planned or underway is not proof that the problem has been resolved. Denpasar’s Sanur flood-prevention report.

Regional illustration of dated flood incidents and prevention concerns around Kuta and Seminyak, Sanur, Jembrana, Sidemen and Amed

Locations are approximate. This illustration shows dated incidents and flood-prevention concerns, not flood extent, a live warning or a hotel safety rating. Select the image to open a larger version. The official provincial risk maps linked below serve a different purpose.

Area What the dated evidence shows What to check before staying
Kuta and Seminyak Badung’s July 2026 report identifies recurring wet-season flooding around Jalan Dewi Sri, plus flood points near the Seminyak village office and former BPBD office. Government report. The hotel’s exact street, previous water entry and the route out. Do not assume new drainage has removed the exposure.
Sanur Flood-prevention work in Sanur Kauh and near Pantai Duyung is documented in October 2026. Room level, drainage and access during heavy rain. A Sanur address alone does not answer these questions.
West Bali, particularly parts of Jembrana BNPB reports flooding on 5 April 2026 in places including Mendoyo Dauh Tukad, Delod Berawah and Air Kuning. BNPB report. River proximity and road access at the actual property. This does not establish the risk at every western destination, including Pemuteran or Menjangan.
Sidemen In September 2025, reporting quoting the Karangasem BPBD chief describes flooding and landslides in Sidemen, including a broken bridge in Tri Eka Buana. Kompas report. Riverbank or valley-floor exposure, steep slopes and the bridges used to reach your accommodation.
Amed A March 2020 local report describes the Sungai Se crossing in Purwakerti flooding across the main road, with strong currents. This is older evidence, not a current road assessment. Fajar Bali report. River crossings, low coastal access and current road conditions. Do not choose Amed on an assumption that it is immune to floods.

Check room level, slopes and access

A room above ground level may reduce exposure to water entering at street level. It can still leave you isolated if the entrance or road floods. A hillside location also needs a check for unstable slopes and landslides. BNPB’s preparedness handbook covers both flood evacuation and slope hazards. BNPB handbook.

Before paying for a wet-season stay, ask the hotel:

  • Have the rooms, grounds or access road flooded during recent heavy rain, including the September 2025 event or any more recent flooding? When did it happen, and how long was access disrupted?
  • Which room can I book above ground level, and what happens if the entrance becomes inaccessible?
  • Does arrival or evacuation require a river crossing, bridge or road that has been cut off before?
  • Where do guests go if evacuation is needed, and how does the hotel receive local warnings?

Use the replies alongside official local information. A reassuring message or an elevation figure is not a safety certification. Prefer a property away from known flood channels and unstable slopes, with reliable road access and a clear response plan. If those details remain unclear, choose another property before making a non-refundable commitment.

Apply the same checks in Ubud, Sidemen and Amed. The dated incidents above do not provide a comparable safety ranking of whole areas.

Use flood maps for regional screening

BPBD Bali publishes separate provincial maps for ordinary flooding and flash flooding. The source maps were prepared in December 2022, at 1:200,000 scale. They are useful for regional screening, but they cannot establish whether a particular room, driveway or evacuation route will remain usable. Read both maps alongside current local information; a hillside stay can still depend on a flood-prone river crossing. BPBD Bali’s official flood-risk maps.

Hotels to compare after checking the property and access

These properties have useful facilities, scenic settings or room categories to investigate for a wet-season stay. Their flood history and access during storms have not been independently verified. Use the hotel questions above before making a non-refundable commitment.

For the Sanur part of the example route, compare Maison Aurelia and ARTOTEL Sanur Bali. Ask both about street drainage, room level and alternative vehicle access. For Ubud, use the location and pickup checks above; this shortlist does not include a named Ubud hotel.

Hotels if you choose a different base

Keep the following options for a trip based in those areas. They are alternatives to the Sanur-and-Ubud route, not extra stops to fit into it.

Area Two hotels to compare Room and access questions
Kuta / Seminyak Ask about an above-ground room, the entrance and the actual approach street.
West Bali Investigate Monsoon rooms at The Menjangan or Forest Villas at Plataran; confirm their actual position and access.
Sidemen Check slope, stream and bridge exposure. Ask Samanvaya about the original Lifestyle Villas and the exact room position.
Amed Check runoff, slope stability, sheltered facilities and coastal-road access.

At The Menjangan, Plataran and Samanvaya, the booking page may offer waterfront or riverside rooms alongside the alternatives you are investigating. Confirm the exact room with the property.

On-site dining and a comfortable room help when an outing changes. Outdoor walks, pools, trails and marine activities still depend on current conditions, even at an elevated property.

Compare the full cost and booking terms

Do not assume that rain makes Christmas or New Year accommodation cheap. Compare actual quotes for your dates rather than assigning one “December price” to the island.

Before paying, check:

  • The full room total, including taxes, service charges and any mandatory meal or event charges.
  • Whether breakfast is included and which room type the quote covers.
  • The cancellation deadline, local time zone and refund conditions.
  • Any minimum stay, deposit or payment deadline.
  • Late-arrival arrangements and whether the booking guarantees access to a room when you land.

For the sample route below, compare Sanur’s two separate stays. If you want to return to the same hotel, check both sets of dates before building the itinerary around it.

Wandopia’s 14-day solo trip cost guide can help you identify budget categories. Its sample itinerary and hotel quotes are separate from this December route. Use your own room totals and transfer quotes to build the holiday budget.

Once those costs are clear, decide which activities deserve advance payment. One class you particularly want, plus several flexible days, is easier to rearrange than a succession of prepaid excursions.

What can you do when outdoor plans change?

A good backup should interest you enough to belong in the trip anyway. The first four options fit the Ubud part of the route; the others are for stays elsewhere. Published details were checked on 8 October. Before paying, confirm a place for one person on your date, the final price, transport and cancellation terms. For classes with outdoor elements or unclear shelter, ask what changes in heavy rain.

These ideas apply when the journey is safe. During active flooding or when access roads are affected, postpone outings and follow accommodation staff and emergency responders’ instructions.

Casa Luna: a scheduled cooking class in Ubud

Casa Luna’s Friday Indonesian Classics class lists Rp500,000 per person, a morning session lasting 3.5 hours, and a location on Jalan Bisma, Ubud. Ingredients, a meal and recipes are included. The class finishes at a shared table. Official class details.

The shared table gives a solo traveler a way to make a meal part of the activity. The Friday description does not list a market walk, unlike the school’s market-tour classes.

Choose the scheduled class when asking for one place. Casa Luna’s separate private class lists a minimum of two guests, includes a market visit and gives its price on request. Private-class conditions.

Museum Puri Lukisan: an art visit without a full-day tour

On Jalan Raya Ubud, Museum Puri Lukisan lists daily opening hours of 09:00–18:00 and an individual adult entrance fee of Rp95,000. It is on Ubud’s main street, west of the palace and market. Museum location, hours and admission.

The exhibition galleries offer an alternative to an outdoor excursion. Take rain protection for arrival and moving around the grounds, and confirm opening arrangements if you intend to visit on a holiday.

Threads of Life: a textile class with an outdoor component

Threads of Life’s Natural Dye Batik Class takes place at its dye studio at Umajati Retreat in Petulu, Ubud. Its published schedule is Monday to Friday, 09:30–13:00. The booking widget displayed Rp950,000 when checked. Official batik-class details and booking.

The program combines studio work with a guided dye-plant garden walk, so you will spend part of the session outdoors. Ask whether that part changes in heavy rain.

The provider describes pickup from Pura Dalem Puri Peliatan and a return after class.

Pottery: put the class early enough in your Ubud stay

Bali Pottery Class’s GetYourGuide listing describes three hours, two kilograms of clay and firing for two pieces. It asks guests who want to take their work home to leave at least four days after the class. Arrange pickup or shipping and its cost before booking, and confirm the studio’s shelter arrangements if you need an activity for heavy rain. Pottery-class details.

For the six-night Ubud stay in the sample route below, an early class gives you room to collect your pieces. Check the actual meeting point against your hotel before booking; the listing name does not establish a central Ubud location.

If you are staying elsewhere

Choose these around your accommodation, rather than adding a distant outing just to fill a rainy day.

Silver jewelry in Seminyak: make something you can wear home

Padi Jewelry Classes’ Seminyak listing describes a two-hour workshop in an air-conditioned studio, including one design and up to six grams of silver. Gold plating and evening sessions are separate options. Transport and meals are not included. Its meeting instructions name Padi Jewelry Classes and Kōsame on Jalan Mertanadi, so confirm the entrance before setting out. Silver-class details.

This fits a southern Bali stay better than adding a long drive from Ubud just to fill a rainy afternoon.

Silver jewelry in Sidemen: a local option if you stay in the valley

If you choose Sidemen as a base, Story Sidemen Silver offers a workshop lasting up to two hours, with one design and up to five grams of silver included. Extra silver is listed at Rp75,000 per gram. Transport is not included; the meeting point is on Jalan Raya Tebola in Telaga Tawang.

Ask about the workshop’s shelter before choosing it for a wet day. Check Sidemen silver-class dates.

Devdan if you are staying around Nusa Dua

Devdan offers an indoor, air-conditioned evening of Indonesian dance and acrobatics. Check the official performance calendar. A solo traveler should arrange transport separately unless the provider confirms a shuttle: the listed shuttle requires at least two people. Keep it as an option near your accommodation rather than adding a long evening journey during heavy rain. It is not a confirmed New Year’s Eve event. Check Devdan tickets and booking conditions.

A flexible 14-day route: two bases, 13 hotel nights

After checking accommodation and access, one example is Sanur for three nights, Ubud for six nights, then Sanur for four nights. Returning to Sanur means three hotel stays in two bases, with two transfers between them. Change the plan if warnings or local conditions affect either stay.

Days Stay Nights Plan
1–3 Sanur 3 Arrive, settle in and keep the first full day light
4–9 Ubud 6 Food, art, a class and outdoor plans that can move
10–13 Sanur 4 Coastal days, spare time and a mainland finish
14 Depart 0 Travel to the airport without a same-day boat connection

Total: 14 calendar days · 13 hotel nights.

Count Day 1 as the day you arrive in Bali. If you land after midnight and want immediate access to a room, ask the hotel whether you need to reserve the preceding night.

The return to Sanur adds a check-out, transfer and check-in. It is a useful tradeoff if you want to finish on the coast, but it is optional. You can also stay in Sanur once and Ubud once, then arrange departure transport from your final hotel.

Keep the daily schedule light:

  • In Sanur, choose a beach walk when conditions suit it and one outing you particularly want. Leave the remaining time for meals, rest and changes.
  • In Ubud, book one scheduled class you care about, keep a museum visit flexible, and give outdoor excursions alternative days.
  • On transfer days, plan the move and dinner. Avoid adding a distant tour with a fixed start time.

This route does not include an overnight island stay. Add one only if it is a priority worth changing the route for, with separate time to return before your flight.

Nusa Penida: leave it out of the default December itinerary

For a first solo trip built around flexibility, this guide recommends staying on mainland Bali and leaving Nusa Penida out of the baseline route. That removes a boat connection you would otherwise depend on. It is an itinerary recommendation, not a claim that crossings or diving are unsafe throughout the entire wet season.

If Nusa Penida is your main reason for visiting, check the marine forecast for the crossing and conditions at the actual activity site close to departure. Be willing to postpone the trip. Diving and snorkeling should not be treated as automatic rainy-day alternatives. A local dive operator describes strong, changing currents around Penida, including hazardous vertical currents, and stresses choosing sites suited to the diver’s experience. These risks depend on the site and conditions, not simply the month. Purple Dive Penida’s safety information.

Do not enter the water when warnings, rough seas or currents make the outing unsuitable. Ask a qualified local operator about your swimming or diving experience, the site’s conditions and its cancellation decision. For snorkeling, a calm-looking surface does not establish a safe current or exit route.

Check boat departures and outdoor access close to the day

If a boat excursion matters to you, keep an alternative day and check the marine forecast for the relevant waters. BMKG’s maritime service includes local forecasts such as Selat Badung. Look at the forecast’s validity dates; a page checked in October cannot establish December sea conditions.

Ask your operator about the departure status, weather decisions and written cancellation or rescheduling conditions. Follow local authority instructions. A ticket on sale is not confirmation that a crossing will run.

Once you decide a crossing belongs in your trip, you can compare Bali transport options through 12Go. Its listed times and prices are booking information; confirm that day’s sailing with the operator and check the marine warnings separately. Read the selected operator’s cancellation terms before paying.

Operator terms also matter for onward travel. For example, Ekajaya’s terms allow weather-related cancellations and delays, exclude liability for costs such as connecting flights and accommodation, and advise at least 24 hours before onward travel. Those are one operator’s terms, not a promise that a day’s buffer is sufficient in every situation. Ekajaya’s carriage conditions.

For this example itinerary, stay on mainland Bali before departure and avoid pairing a boat return with your flight on the same day. If an island stay becomes essential, give its return room to move and understand who bears additional costs if it is delayed.

Treat a hike, waterfall visit or other outdoor excursion the same way: check current warnings, access and conditions with its operator before going. If the trip only feels worthwhile when every weather-dependent activity happens, reconsider the dates or simplify the plan.

Pack for rain and prepare for disruption

Pack a light rain layer, then protect the things you cannot easily replace. Keep your passport, visa or arrival records, insurance details and emergency contacts in a sealed waterproof pouch or dry bag. Zip-seal plastic bags inside the pouch provide an extra layer when you carry them. Save protected digital copies that you can access offline, and keep the document pouch above floor level at your accommodation. Prepare a small grab bag with your phone, charger or power bank, essential medication and drinking water. Flood preparation guidance.

If flooding affects your route

Never ride a motorbike into floodwater or walk the bike through it. Stop before the flooded section; use a clear dry route to turn back only if you can do so safely. Water can hide damaged road surfaces and other hazards, and a fast current can carry a person or vehicle away. Other riders crossing is not evidence that it is safe. The same rule applies to a car or taxi. National Weather Service flood safety.

If heavy rain blocks your route, postpone the journey from a safe location away from riverbanks and fast-flowing water. Waiting is appropriate only while that location remains safe. If water is rising around you or authorities order evacuation, move promptly along a safe route and seek help rather than waiting for the storm to finish. Leave the motorbike and luggage if recovering them would put you in danger. Follow hotel staff and local emergency responders; do not cross floodwater to reach your booking. National Weather Service guidance.

Keep away from bridges over fast-moving water and do not enter floodwater on foot. If you cannot reach a safe exit, seek a higher accessible level and call for assistance. Do not delay evacuation to pack. Flood response guidance.

Read the policy’s medical, evacuation and accommodation provisions before buying. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Essential currently includes a limited benefit for replacement accommodation after local authorities order evacuation because of a natural disaster, up to US$150 per day for five days per active insurance period. Proof of the original payment and replacement accommodation receipts is required, with additional conditions for storms and general policy exclusions. Essential policy, page 17.

That benefit is not a promise to reimburse every flood-related loss, a voluntarily abandoned stay or a canceled ferry. Ask the insurer how the policy applies to your dates and situation, including existing warnings, before relying on it. Keep the policy and assistance details with your protected documents. Avoiding floodwater and following evacuation instructions remain essential.

You can review SafetyWing Essential options alongside the full policy conditions before buying.

Your December planning checklist

Before booking, choose the experiences that would make the holiday worthwhile even if you rearrange the outdoor days. Then:

  • Confirm the number of hotel nights against your local arrival and departure dates.
  • Reserve accommodation with clear cancellation and late-arrival terms.
  • Check availability for the one or two scheduled activities you most want.
  • Leave alternative days for outdoor plans and avoid a same-day boat-to-flight connection.
  • Pack a light rain layer and a sealed waterproof pouch for your passport and essential documents; keep a small grab bag ready.
  • Recheck BMKG’s forecasts and local BPBD warnings, confirm access conditions with your hotel, and know its evacuation arrangements.
  • Use Wandopia’s Bali visa and arrival guide for the entry checklist, then confirm the requirements for your passport and purpose on the official immigration portal.

Choose the dates and one or two experiences you most want, then book accommodation that supports those days. Leave the outdoor plans room to move.
